The most common cause is heredity but some contributory factors are obesity, pregnancy, prolonged standing, aging, and injury. On your first visit to the clinic, a thorough non-invasive examination of your leg is performed and a relevant medical history taken. This may include the use of the Doppler machine. A comprehensive explanation of the treatment, possible side effects, and costs will be given. Advice on prevention of disease will be offered. Treatment can be given at this visit. The methods used are: SclerotherapyThis is the technique of closing an affected vein by injecting a sclerosing solution. A fibrous cord called sclerosis is formed causing closure of the vein so that the blood will circulate through other healthy veins in the legs. This is performed in the clinic and you may return to your usual activities. This treatment has been in use for many years and continues to be the most effective and economical treatment for leg veins. PhotodermA pulsed-light technology, similar to laser, uses heat to close the affected veins. Both treatments cause some mild, short lasting discomfort. It is recommended that you wear support hose. These are available at the clinic. The Yorkville Vein Clinic is conveniently situated in downtown Toronto, at Bay Subway.
